Le jour de Pâques de l’an 1722, le Néerlandais Jakob Roggeveen aperçut en plein Pacifique Sud une terre minuscule de 164 km2, sur laquelle se dressaient de hautes statues de pierre. Aujourd’hui, Pointe-à-Callière vous offre de découvrir, à votre tour, cette « Île de Pâques », trois fois plus petite que l’île de Montréal dont la plus proche civilisation est à plus de 2000 km. L’exposition fait revivre l’histoire fascinante du peuple rapanui, en plus de mettre en valeur l’ampleur de sa culture, de sa créativité et de son esthétisme. Le public aura le privilège d’observer plus de 200 objets d’une remarquable qualité d’exécution provenant des plus prestigieux musées internationaux.

On Easter Day in the year 1722, the Dutchman Jakob Roggeveen spotted a tiny 165-square-kilometre peck of land right in the middle of the South Pacific, on which there stood tall stone statues. Today, Pointe-à-Callière is giving you the opportunity to discover this “Easter Island” -three times smaller than the island of Montréal, and 2,000 km away from the nearest civilization. The exhibition will bring to life the fascinating history of the people of Rapa Nui, in addition to showcasing the scope of their culture, creativity, and aesthetics. The public will have the privilege of seeing over 200 remarkably well-made objects from the most prestigious international museums.
